MTV: Joshua Jackson On Batman Near Miss, Eyes Spider-Man
A few days ago we brought you news that Chris Cooper was ‘this’ close to snagging the role of Lt.
James Gordon in “Batman Begins,” and wondered what it would be like if the Oscar-winner took
the part instead of Gary Oldman.
That’s nothing, though, compared to the what-if game with Bruce Wayne himself.
“I went and did the screen test,” “Shutter” star Joshua Jackson revealed to MTV News. “I was
one the last four or five guys [up for the role of Batman.]”
Jackson as Batman over Christian Bale? It’s hard to believe how different the film would have
been had he nabbed the part – perhaps most of all to Jackson himself.
“I don’t like to lose any job, but they cast the right guy,” he said. “I mean, Christian Bale was
excellent. I don’t really think of myself in a sort of comic book hero way, you know what I mean?
This might be why I didn’t get that job.”
It’s hard to say, of course, why Jackson didn’t steal the role. But it certainly wasn’t from a lack of
understanding of the character, a crime-fighting vigilante Jackson called “a tremendously f—ked
up human being.”
“Batman is a man dealing with a deeply f—ed up childhood that has now carried itself forward. As
a grown man he dresses up as a bat, goes and kicks the shit out of people at night. That’s a dark
place,” Jackson said of what he would have focused on in his alternate universe portrayal. “And,
you know, he is not a super hero so it hurts. He is obviously some sort of sadist. It’s not funny,
the infliction and the feeling of pain.”
When he lost out on Wayne, Jackson seemed to have given up the goal of playing a super…for
now at least.
“You know, honestly, out of the big super heroes the guy that I would most naturally be a fit to
play is Spider-Man, but that one is pretty well locked up,” he said of the role made famous by
Tobey Maguire. “And, frankly, I’m too old to play that character because the parable of Spiderman
is the teenager going through puberty.”
But there will be a “Spider-Man 4,” and Tobey hasn’t officially signed on…
“Well then, yeah,” Jackson laughed. “That was really subtle of me putting my name in the hat.”

Ellen Page Escapes From "Hell"
"Juno" star and Oscar nominee Ellen Page has dropped out of Sam Raimi's supernatural
thriller "Drag Me to Hell" due to scheduling conflicts.
In a joint statement to Shock Til You Drop from Ghost House Pictures and Mandate Pictures,
it was revealed that the start date of the production was pushed back as the project wasn't
going to be ready to complete before the potential SAG strike date.
The delay meant that the filmmakers could not accommodate Ellen's schedule and so she has
departed. The project marks the first post-"Spiderman" film for Sam Raimi and is written by
both Raimi and his brother Ivan.

won him an award he never expected
"One day, I got an award in the mail from an organization that promotes the awareness
of drug abuse. I was happy to get the award, but didn't know why. Then I realized it was
for my first [MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER MAN] story arc, which was about the Absorbing Man
as a drug addict, and the ripple effect of that addiction. It was a really twisted story, and I
was happy to have it recognized as having a positive effect."

IESB Exclusive: Venom Stand Alone Film Moving Forward!
Eddie Brock to get his stand alone film, Venom is coming back to the big screen!
One of the biggest disappointments from Spider-Man 3 was how they developed the villains,
or actually how they didn't develop the villains, but between the three baddies that we had
to contend with the biggest let down was Eddie Brock A.K.A. Venom.
Venom, by far one of the coolest villains in the Spider-Man universe, was played poorly by
Topher Grace and was definitely one of the biggest let downs in the entire Spider-Man trilogy.
Not to say Topher Grace was the wrong man for the job, but with poor material and a badly
put together movie, you just weren't going to get any stellar performances. I mean, asking
God to kill Peter Parker is one of the lamest lines I've ever heard.
But Venom fans rejoice, Marvel is moving forward with a new stand alone film, yep you
heard right, Venom is coming back to the big screen.
We've confirmed that "the studio" has met recently with several "A list writers" about a
spin-off film.
Eight years ago, New Line Cinema held the theatrical rights to Venom. Since then, the rights
have reverted back Marvel. But does Sony have complete control over the character since he
was a part of Spidey 3 or does Marvel control the rights to the character with Sony only
having distribution rights?
We have to assume that since there is movement and there has been recent meetings with
writers this property must belong to Marvel since they have made an interim agreement with
the WGA and proceed to develop projects during the current strike. Either way, one thing is
for certain, Venom will get a second shot at the big screen.
Will it be a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type of storyline or are we going to see other characters
from the Marvel universe such as Scorpion or maybe even Carnage? Let the assumptions and
speculation begin. We will try to get Marvel and/or Sony to go on the record early next week.
